What is hot stone therapy?
Beauty Defined is now offering hot stone therapy as part of our Beauty Essentials portfolio, but what exactly is it?
Hot stone therapy is a specialist massage where our therapist uses smooth, heated stones, either as an extension of their own hands, or by placing them on the body while they massage other parts of the body. The heat can be both deeply relaxing and help warm up tight muscles.
Hot stones have been used as a form of treatment for many hundreds of years: the Arabs used stone as a contraceptive for their camels by placing it in the camel’s womb; the Japanese wore warm stones around their stomach to warm their abdomens and aid digestions; native American Indians used stones for menstrual pain treatment by placing one warmed stone on the stomach and another one at the feet of the patient; and the Chinese used hot stones to relieve muscular pain.
Don’t worry, Beauty Defined do not use hot stone therapy as a form of contraception! We offer this treatment as a relaxing and therapeutic alternative to a traditional massage.
The massage usually starts with you lying face down, with the therapist working on your back. First, the therapist warms up the body with traditional massage, and then massages you with a heated stone. As the stone cools, the therapist replaces it with another. The therapist uses stones of various shapes and sizes: big ones on the big muscles, smaller ones on smaller muscles.
The therapist might also leave heated stones in specific points along your spine, in the palms of your hand, on your belly, or even between your toes to improve the flow of energy in your body.
Hot stone therapy is a wonderful experience, available now from £32 at Beauty Defined.
